All of this is made possible through tithes and offerings. This year the goal of the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering is $175 million dollars which provides 57% of our annual budget.

I would like to encourage everyone not to just give but to be obedient. The Lord has completely changed the dynamics of our family through the call to missions and personal obedience. Granted, God is changing people's lives through many different circumstances and venues not just through missions but in the end no matter the median used, the end result is God.

In talking about the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, we would like to personalize it by sharing with you how your tithes and offerings have affected us over the last couple of years.

The IMB has been phenomenal in providing our needs as SBC Churches have provided the resources and we would like to highlight a couple of areas:

We are thankful for our Sonlight Curriculum which is provided (100%) to homeschool our children.. The IMB also provides monies for extra-curricular activities outside of the home for personal development but also that they too might engage and interact with the culture.

We are thankful for transportation. We have a vehicle provided at 100%. As many of you are feeling the burden of rising fuel cost, we are grateful for the monies allocated for transportation. Presently, fuel is $5.65 per gallon here in the Dominican Republic.

We are thankful for Medical Insurance. Early on, in the economic down-turn of the American Economy, the IMB was faced with making cuts in our health coverage. Presently we receive our Medical Insurance at 100% coverage. This is truly amazing! As many of you know, Adelyn was a miracle baby that did not come cheap. It is with great tears and humility that we say, Tthank you." We have NO medical debt and we are free to serve Him and fulfill our call.

We are thankful for our housing here in the Dominican Republic as well. Recently, we were back in the States and Jacob asked, “Daddy, when will we go back home?” He was referring to our apartment here in Santo, Domingo.

We are also thankful for our non-SBC churches that love us just the same. You all provide for us through your prayers and some through financial gifts for ministry support. In fact, this year a small church outside of Steelville, MO provided the resources to subsidies 10 John MacArthur, Spanish Study Bibles for local pastors.

In closing, Merry Christmas and Lord Bless and we pray that you all will be blessed as you reflect on our savior.

Adelyn's Big Day!

Adelyn Caroline Gillen is officially 2 years old! It was a day of reflecting, eating tons of food, fellowship, and enjoying football (it was muted in the background). Go Cowboys!

As I reflected this Thanksgiving, I was truly reminded of the volatility of life. Addi will be two years old on November 27th. Many of you shared in our journey back to the States with our little preemie. She has defied many odds and continues to excel in all aspects. I have heard many people say, “She was a fighter!” Sometimes our response is that of a gentle smile, a chuckle, or even the shedding of a tear as it brings back the flood of emotions. However, as we truly reflect on that which sustained Addi, we quickly realize that Addi had nothing to do with it. Addi had no inherent ability to say to her little heart, “close the hole that is causing problems” or to say to her lungs, “expand on the count of three.” or to command her lower digestive track, “function as I designed you to function.” There were several families that their little ones never made it out of ICU. Was their death due to an inborn desire not to fight? I heard the parent’s cries and we felt their pain and we wondered, “Will we leave the ICU with or without Addi?” We prayed, “Lord, if it be your will allow Addi to live and if not grant us the grace to endure the pain.” So, did Addi really fight? Did the preemies that died really die because of a lack of fighting? NO. God sustained Addi and God chose for her to live and he chose the other preemies to be with him.

It’s amazing that none of us are any different than Addi. Each and every day we too are in the ICU. The absence of God’s sustaining touch in our lives would result in death. When was the last time you thanked God for your life? Thanked him for allowing your lungs to grant you your next life sustaining breath? Have you considered that at any moment your heart could stop beating? After all, three-thousand people die every day from a heart attack and roughly 155,000 people die every day in the world. Why are you still living? Why have you been chosen to live this very day?
This is what I am thankful for; I am thankful for every day that the Lord in His sovereignty allows me to experience life. I am thankful that today my family is alive and well. We have been granted the joy of experiencing another day with our creator, another day with each other, and another day to be lavished with the grace of God.

I hope that whoever reads this letter will truly realize that we are all in the ICU of this world and we will not escape except through death. The final destination will vary. For some, that which remains is a place of rest and worship with the creator, a place beyond comprehension. For others, that which lingers is a place of despair and torment, which too is beyond comprehension. Thus, I close with this. Do you know what awaits you? Will it be a place of rest or despair beyond comprehension? Either way, whether you are filled with security or uncertainty I would encourage you to ask the Lord to draw you unto him, to make you aware of your sin, and to prepare you for life outside of the ICU.

Psalm 139, John 6, John 17, Acts 2-3; 13, Romans 1-10,

I DO!

Today is a special day. I have been married to DeNiel N. Gillen for thirteen years. It has most definitely been a journey to behold and one to anticipate as our lives continue to unfold. I can promise you that thirteen years ago at South Gate Baptist Church in Springfield, MO I was scared to death and yet filled with excitement.

As we left the church, our first adventure was Florida for our honeymoon. Being a young rural Missouri boy I thought Al-Qaida was all around us before Al-Qaida was a house hold name; everyone one was suspect. I walked around Sea World in fear of being abducted and was in need of a psychiatric evaluation during the whole trip. It was at that time that I promised to myself that I would never leave the USA or MO.

A year went by and we felt ourselves being called to Seminary. We spent three days in Texas looking at the Seminary and the night of our one year anniversary (our return from visiting Southwestern) we discovered we were with CHILD! Kylie was born and what a surprise being a parent was. DeNiel in her infinite wisdom got herself pregnant again within three months of Kylie’s arrival with Brooklin. Wow! I was excited, depressed, and nervous and in need of yet another psychiatric evaluation! It was during this news that we were in the process of transferring to FBC St. James, MO. The Lord certainly blessed us in our move to St. James. It was a little nerve racking at first because we were so close to St. Louis a “Big City!”

We made St. James our home. It was during our time in St. James that the Lord would provide us with the man child, Jacob. What a difference between boys and girls! No EMOTIONS! Seven years into our ministry there we felt the Lord leading us to serve overseas! Oh how the Lord has a way of changing people and their perspectives. I was never going to leave neither the USA nor Missouri and here we were contemplating being foreign missionaries. Eventually, we would join the IMB and find ourselves in Costa Rica learning Spanish. What a treat this was. DeNiel excelled and I struggled because of my roots in Southern Missouri. The accent was just a little much and the lack of grammar where I am from would come back to haunt me. Nonetheless, we made it through and once again, DeNiel would be pregnant with our fourth and final child, Adelyn. What a journey she was and is! She is a hoot!

It’s incredible where the Lord has taken us and what he has taught us. In just thirteen years we have been to Arizona, California, Chicago, Florida, Hawaii (twice), Kansas, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Las Vegas, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington DC, Costa Rica (for 1 year), Columbia (Bogotá), Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico City, Niagara Falls (Canada), Nicaragua, Panama, Peru (Lima), and we now live in the Dominican Republic.

Besides our wonderful kids, travels, and life as missionaries, that which I truly treasure the most is DeNiel. She is not the same girl that said, “Yes,” thirteen years ago. She inspires me to be a godly man. She is truly my better half. I must close with thank you DeNiel for saying, “I do” and thank you for putting Christ first. The times have not always been easy but the trials have always been welcomed for they themselves have developed within each of us a deeper understanding of our sinful, selfish nature and allowed us to grow in maturity in our walk with the Lord. Thank you DeNiel for growing in godliness and making our home a refuge, sanctuary, and a median for growing future disciples of Christ!

I will sign off the way, in which we started thirteen years ago today,

I DO!

Vacation & Life Back in the DR

The Gillen family has had a busy few months. Let’s catch you all up! As many of you know, or don’t know, our family and friends provided tickets for us to fly back to Missouri for the month of September. What a blessing! Anthony had the opportunity to preach at a few different churches. We stayed with different family and friends and enjoyed true fellowship- in English! It really was a time of refreshment and renewal for us. Our favorite times were visiting with family, riding go-carts, making smores and drinking coffee around the fire at night, and just smelling fresh, clean air all around us. I cannot put into words how God used those three to four weeks in Missouri to rejuvenate us and allow us some time of relaxation.

Another of my favorite times during our vacation was my and Anthony’s trip to Mexico. It is official. We are moving to Mexico City (yes, that is the 1st or 2nd largest city in the world). We have heard from many how dangerous and difficult this move will be, but we are following God’s call on our lives. When God is for us, who can be against us? As Anthony preached, “Can the waves tell their master, ‘No, I will not move today?’ or the sun say to its creator, ‘No, I will not shine?’” So, we too, must obey our Master and Creator. He knows FAR more than we do and we place our lives in His hands.

I will say, we will be living in a very safe neighborhood with another IMB missionary family that has kids our kids’ ages! There is a yard (with grass!), a park, and Anthony’s office within walking distance. We will take on the same role of Logistic Coordinator, only there are more missionaries in Mexico, versus the Island of Hispanolia. We are looking at moving sometime around May, June or July next year. Please pray for our transition regarding: emotions, selling/buying ALL of our belongings, and keeping our focus here these next 6-8 months. I’m sure we will have more prayer requests regarding Mexico as the time nears.

So, you wonder how things are going here in the Dominican Republic? So far, very well. Anthony has still been discipling the young men from the church in Pedro Brand. These guys are hungry for the Word of God and those of you who provided us with ministry funds while we were home, well-you actually bought new study bibles, bible dictionaries, and some nice small tubs to keep them in (remember, it’s VERY humid here and humidity eats books!). We have also been able to share with some of the neighborhood kids. It has been such a blessing to hear our children share truths from God’s Word with other children. I have also been able to share some more with the maids in our apartment complex and I’m teaching a couple of them how to sew/repair clothing. Please remember to pray for the children and maids in our apartment complex that they will have a desire to hear and understand the Word of God.

As for the home front, all three of the older kids are in school full force now! In addition to our basic studies, we have added a new class for the girls…Home Economics! I am officially training my little ladies to be wives, mothers, seamstresses, cooks, and for a little added bonus, bow makers and violinists. (Granted, they do have an official violin teacher, but I’m thankful to be able to help them with their practices.) I think this is the most enjoyable year of schooling that we have had yet! Even little Jake is enjoying making some clothes for his Scruffy Puppy. I would like to take a moment to thank my mom and Jeana for teaching me to sew while we were home! Presently, schooling is going very well in all areas. Thank the Lord! Would you take a moment to praise God for helping us school/train our children? Please ask Him to continue to pour out His wisdom on Anthony and me.

My blog entry is getting too long. I would like to include one photo from our vacation. It was tough to decide which picture to include, but here it is. Our last prayer request is that God would use our family to bring glory to Himself. This is why we do what we do. It is why we are here. Thank you for your support and prayers! We have been blessed beyond measure.

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." James 1:17

Hurricane Emily, Travel Plans, Updates

It's been too long since we posted an update! Currently, Hurricane Emily is showering us with an abundance of rain. The streets are flooded and thus, driving is very nice. We appreciate your prayers in this matter and should anything change we will let you know.

Well, if you have looked at our countdown you have probably noticed a change. We are so excited! Our family has pulled their money together and purchased tickets for us to come back home for a month. The kids are pumped! Grandparents will get to see baby Adelyn for the first time in almost a year and a half. So much has changed with baby Adelyn. She is walking, talking, screaming and filling our lives with joy 24/7. She has her siblings completely wrapped around her little fingers. It is so cute to watch each of them nurture and care for her.

DeNiel has been very busy starting homeschool with Jacob. My wife is truly incredible! She is doing such a fantastic job with our kids. They are truly blessed to have a mother that walks with the Lord and longs to teach her kids a biblical worldview and how to walk with Him. The girls started school this week. Kylie is in the 6th grade and Brooklin is in the 4th grade. They are both little ladies and learning to love the Lord.

I have been very busy with property issues, teams, discipleship and personal study. The office is getting closer and closer every day to being organized. We almost have all the titles for every IMB owned property in order with the local government. I have been working on this for about 7 months. My goal was to be done by October 1st. I don't know that we will make this deadline. However, I am so thankful for the Christian lawyers that God has put in my life. When we meet it's a time to work but it also a time of mentoring. As my language increases, the level of discipleship that I am able to offer also increases.

The Lord has blessed me this year with my language acquisition. Last week I was asked to preach on a Wednesday night. The lesson was great! Everyone was involved and we didn't finish until 10pm. We started the teaching time at 7:30pm. Granted, my Spanish is NOT perfect but it is so much better than before. I thoroughly enjoyed engaging my Dominican brothers and sisters in an in depth study of the Word.

Recently, I was able to work with a team for a week in Santiago and the Lord really used this time to solidify how to properly share the Gospel. Now, I know this sounds weird but if you would be interested in discussing this more with me please, let me know and we can Skype about it. It would take me 10-15 pages to lay it all out for you.

One last thing, it was a blessing to have Kolby with us for three weeks during the month of July. I believe the Lord used that time to show Kolby God's sovereignty. Pray for him as he begins college and seeks the Lord for God's will in his life.

In closing, please continue to pray. We are always so thankful for the prayers that you offer on our and the Dominican's behalf. I will be preaching Sunday, August 7th. We also have a fellow missionary friend that will be living with us for two weeks. We look forward to seeing many of you in the States!

In Him,
The Gillens

Wow! How the weather has changed since our last post. The heat has been brutal here in the Dominican Republic. I (Anthony) was so exhausted from the heat yesterday that I went to bed at 8:30pm. The only thing we do nowadays is sweat and drink water. Food is just not appealing at this point. However, ice cream at Burger King has become a necessity. Did I mention that they have air-conditioning?

One of the reasons that we are struggling with the sudden change in temperature is because of our week in Guatemala. We recently traveled to Guatemala for the OGM. This is an Occasional General Meeting for all missionaries serving in the Americas. It was a great time of encouragement and meeting old friends. A BIG THANKS goes out to all of our SBC Churches for making this possible.

The Lord has blessed our time with discipling and door to door evangelism over the last month. DeNiel and I were both able to translate for a mission team in Bayona. One lady was filled with anger and bitterness towards her ex-husband. He had left her and her 3 kids for another woman. The sad thing is that they were both involved in their church and professing believers. As we talked with the woman, we realized that she had left her church family due to being embarrassed and was hurting more over the loss of her church than her ex. Granted, she experienced much pain but had been unable to fully heal due to the loss of her church family. As we spoke with her and walked through the scriptures, you could see God literally restoring a joy within her life for her church family! Would you join us in prayer that she would be restored to her church family and that she also would receive total healing through her many broken relationships including her ex?

During our time with the mission team, we had the pleasure of spending time with a friend we met at language school in Costa Rica. It was great catcing up on old times and reflecting on our journeys. Plus, he brought us a trunk filled with goodies! His family truly blessed us with the trunk! Ken is traveling back to the states today and has had many opportunities open up for him in ministry. Would you pray for Ken that God would make it abundantly clear where He would have him serve?

These next several weeks many short-term mission teams will come. Please join us in prayer that God will:
*use these teams to glorify His name and accomplish His will, drawing the lost Dominicans and Hatians unto Him.
*protect them, and us from the extreme heat.
*use this time to grow Kolby, our summer missionary who will stay with us for 3 weeks & help w/ Anthony.
*continue to cast His vision in our hearts for a godly family as we raise our four sweet children.
We cannot express our thankfulness for your prayers on our behalf and the behalf of the Dominicans. God is working powerfully and we have had the opportunity to see several prayers answered! Praise God!

April Updates

Recent Travels
We are so thankful for the prayers of His saints that continue to intercede on our behalf. The recent trips to Haiti, and Lima, Peru were successful. I am happy to report that the missionary family in Haiti officially has a place to call home. The Board recently approved our proposal for their rental home. The family was so excited when I called them with the news. The wife cried out "Praise the Lord!" Would you join me in praying for them to receive their belongings from the States and the Dominican Republic without any issues and in a timely manner? The kids are in need of their home school curriculum.

Discipleship
My recent trips made it very difficult for me to continue my discipleship with Alex and Christian, but upon my return they were more than eager to spend the night with us and just hang out. We went swimming, played Wii, and ate at Taco Bell! They loved it! I know this doesn't seem too spiritual but the guys were able to relate to us on a personal level (I believe discipleship is a life on life process). The weekend was great and we are all looking forward to the next time that we get to just "hang out." Would you please join me in praying for Alex and Christian as we continue to walk through Romans in our time of study? Pray that the Lord will continue to draw them unto him, guard their purity, and further solidify their desires for his Kingdom.

Mask and Snorkel Anyone?
This weekend was a getaway weekend for the family at the beach. It was truly a refreshing time to experience the awe and wonder of our Lord's creation. The view of the ocean with the waves crashing on the shore was amazing, and to observe the ocean melting into the horizon, breathtaking. The time spent with our Lord was truly incredible. During this time, the Lord really spoke to me through Jacob. We had been out swimming and kayaking with the kids in the ocean the first part of the day, so late afternoon I opted for some personal time snorkeling. It was beautiful watching the different species of fish feeding around an old abandoned dock. Sometime had passed and Jacob came running down to the ocean shaking like a leaf from swimming in the rather cold swimming pool. He asked if he could go snorkeling. Reluctantly, I gave up my personal time and said, "Of course but you are freezing cold." He said he didn't care he just wanted to be with me (he's such a smooth talker). So, I gave him my snorkel and used his .50 cent snorkel (another sacrifice but who's counting). We had been floating around for three or four minutes pointing at different fish and giving each other thumbs up under the water when Jacob pops up with a BIG SMILE and says, "Daddy, this is AWESOME and I love snorkeling with you. I never knew it was so AWESOME under the ocean!"

Wow! I realized right then that like Jacob, I once believed everything my eyes were seeing was 'it' and I had no idea of the AWESOMENESS of God all around me. Jacob's story is a lot like salvation. He saw the ocean but never saw the fish until his eyes were opened with a mask and snorkel. He was asking me today, "Dad, when are we going snorkeling again?"

I want to close with these questions. Has God ever opened your eyes to experience his glory? If he has, then you realize what a sinner you truly are and your need for his forgiveness and salvation. This world is like the ocean view I described earlier. It's beautiful, but in order to truly experience life you need the word of God to open your eyes to see the life that's waiting in Jesus Christ. Once the Lord opens your eyes, you will never want to go back to your former way of life. Like Jacob, you will always want to go deeper than the surface. You will want to experience the depths of Christ love! Are you ready to grab your mask and snorkel to experience the depths of God's love?

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:1-5).

Continued Prayer

As I read over our last blog entry I realized that this entry may be a little redundant, but we are still seeking prayer warriors to intercede on our behalf and on behalf of the missionary family returning to Haiti. Maybe they misunderstand me. After all, my Spanish is not perfect. “Who knows the story of David, from the Bible, and the Giant”? Nothing.

I ask if anyone would like to pray and little Juan raises his hand. This is good because his Spanish is certainly better than mine! I don’t get every word he says, but it sounds like the same memorized prayer he prayed last time.

So, I pray, “Lord Jesus, open our eyes to see you and our ears to hear you. Give us understanding of your Word, your stories in the Bible. Amen.”

As I read and retell the story of young David’s courage and defeat of the huge giant, the children’s eyes are huge. The entire time I’m sharing with them I am thinking, ‘Wow. This is the first time they are hearing this!?!’

Afterward, we talk about what this story means, and what it means to us. No matter how difficult life is, how hard a situation can be, God is bigger and stronger. He is our protector and provider. God, our creator, gives us exactly what we need when we need it. David prayed, obeyed, & trusted in his God, and God knew David’s heart. He helped David.

These five & six year olds are beginning to squirm a little. It’s been almost fifteen minutes. I notice one boy is really hanging on every word. After asking them if there are any questions or comments, we pray. “God, our creator, draw us to you. Remind us of your faithfulness, even during hard times, throughout this week. Amen.”

There are over twenty kids living in our complex (including our four). Some of these guys have a little knowledge of God’s Word. Many of them know nothing. One boy, Diego, asked his Nanny, “Who is God? I don’t know Him. Tell me who he is.”

That is where you and I come in. Many of you are involved in a ministry that you know nothing about. You have been praying for and sending out missionaries, but what exactly are they doing out there? This is just one tiny snippet of what we, with the help of our Lord, are doing.

Every Thursday evening we have a children's Bible study in our home. The stories that most of us know, and have always known, do not exist in their little worlds. It is time to rally the troops (that’s you and me) to pray. Would you please pray specifically for our Thursday night Bible study here in Santo Domingo? Pray that God would allow these children, ranging from 4 years to 15 years old, to stay attentive to the Bible stories. Pray that God would draw them into a relationship with Himself to further His Kingdom.

And, thank you for your involvement and work in the ministry here in the Dominican Republic. The giant we face cannot be defeated by man alone. (BP)--Thomas (Tom) D. Elliff, longtime Oklahoma pastor, Southern Baptist Convention leader and former missionary, is the unanimous recommendation of a 15-member trustee search committee to be the next president of International Mission Board.

The nomination of Elliff -- who served as a missionary to Zimbabwe with his wife, Jeannie, in the early 1980s -- will be presented to the full board of trustees for consideration and a possible vote when they meet March 15-16 in Dallas.

If elected, Elliff would succeed Jerry Rankin as leader of the mission board, which coordinates the work of more than 5,000 Southern Baptist missionaries worldwide. Rankin retired as IMB president July 31, 2010, after 17 years at the helm. Veteran missionary and Executive Vice President Clyde Meador currently serves as interim president.

IMB trustee chairman Jimmy Pritchard, who has led the presidential search committee throughout its selection process, announced the nomination Feb. 17. He said Elliff emerged as the committee's clear and unanimous choice in January.

"Throughout the process, we talked to some great and godly men, but we just could not get a sense of God's peace about any one of them," said Pritchard, pastor of First Baptist Church in Forney, Texas. "When Dr. Elliff's name came before us, we had a subtle sense of God's Spirit speaking to our hearts. That may sound mystical, but that's really what happened.... Every one of us senses that God spoke and said, 'This is the moment you've been praying for. The last couple of weeks I have broken a sweat just sitting in my living room. The break from the heat has been nice and the nights are still cool but unfortunately, it will be changing soon. I know this is drastically different from the weather many of our friends and family are experiencing back in the States. It's been freezing rain, snowing and just very cold! Well, hang in there because warmer days are coming for you too.

I would like to share with you about the new church plant that we have been working with. The pastor's name is Alehandro. Alehandro is a young accountant with a beautiful wife by the name of Joanna and they have 4 kids. One day, Alehandro came into the Baptist Bookstore and stumbled across a book about church planting. He went home, read the book, and called the author of the book.

The author of the book is the executive director of the Dominican Baptist Convention. His name is Manolo. Manolo, as a young boy, was basically raised by an IMB missionary (Paul Sierberman) and grew up as a missionary kid here in the Dominican Republic. In fact, to fast forward many years, now he is also the pastor of the church that Paul Sierbman planted in Puerto Plata. He has planted many churches and has started Macedonia school which teaches believers how to plant churches.

Alehandro was so encouraged by the conversation. Feeling the Lord leading him to be a church planter, he began a bible study in his neighborhood and thus, started the church 'Pedro Brand'. The church now has a building and recently, Alehandro started teaching the Macedonia curriculum. There has since been many "professions" of faith, but time will reveal the real nature of their lives. God is the only seeker.

Several of the "professions" have been young teenage boys. Since, I had started discipling two young men by the name of Christian and Alex in October; we have just begun a new study. Now, we have around 8-10 teenagers on Wednesday nights and we are going through the book of Romans. I will blog more about this next week.

It's funny how the Lord works things out. I was a youth pastor for 11 years in the States and here I am in another country doing the same thing. I feel honored to be discipling the future church pastors and leaders of the Dominican Republic. But, I wish I had the higher level of language that was needed to go along with it. It’s also interesting how often times the verses of inspiration for me are found in Numbers 22:22-35. If only I would be as effective as the deliverer of truth found in this passage.

Would you joing me in praying for the church at Pedro Brand?

Pray that the Lord would:

-Deepen Alehandro's walk with the Lord.
-Convinct the church of sin.
-Draw people unto him in Pedro Brand.
-Grow his kingdom in the lives of the new believers.

Reflecting on 2010

As we look into the year 2011, we must look back at the amazing journey of 2010. DeNiel and I were so excited to finally be done with language school and boarding the plane for the Dominican Republic. The flight was very difficult but normal for us. Anytime you travel to another country with almost every pair of socks, shoes, shirts, jeans, shorts, toothbrush, books, chairs, computers, etc. and for 6 people, it's going to be a long day. We were modern day Gypsies (with 28 pieces of luggage but who's counting) and thus, at the airport, we are funny looking, painfully sticking out, and as parents, we have the look of 'will this day ever end.'

Oh, I forgot about my police issued expandable baton. I was worried about it being stolen and I had asked if I needed to check it (2-3 times) and the man said, "no, your fine." Whatever. That was good for a near strip search, an array of questions, thorough examination of various bags, further analysis of all our passports and I can't count the number of times that I said, "I'm sorry but I don't speak Spanish!" DeNiel kept saying, "Honey, they are speaking English!" Meanwhile, Jacob is saying, "Daddy I am hungry, Daddy I am ready to go." It was terrible; although, we did receive a personal escort to our departing flight.

Well the day ended and it was so refreshing to finally lay our heads down in the Dominican Republic at 2:30 in the morning. It was a journey that in reality took us two and a half years to complete. We would spend the next 3 weeks attempting to install internet, phone service, setting up cell phone plans and acquiring our visas. Oh, I am still trying to resolve my billing issues. We won't even talk about the issues surrounding traffic. Even if I did, you wouldn't believe me and would probably dismiss my description as mumbo jumbo. Nonetheless, I hope you can just trust me on this one. The traffic is bad. Go ahead, pace yourself and drive 3 miles in 45 minutes! It's fun, a time to catch up on your prayer life, a time to learn patience, and a time to reflect on what's really inside of your heart! LOL!

After all of our adjustments, we realized that the people in Dominican Republic didn't seem to speak Spanish. It's a form of Spanish and it's just unique. The reality of this was never clearer than the time we were at Pedro Brand, a new church plant. I thought they asked me to come forward to say hello. But oh, was I wrong! They had asked me to preach! Once the language barriers were removed and we were all on the same page, I said, "not today." And the pastor asked another missionary to preach and I was "SET FREE!"

It was about the end of our second month here that the excitement of being pregnant was quickly turning to nervousness, fear, anxiety, concern and pretty much every other day in the doctor's office. The doctors began to use the terms 'growth restricted' along with 'platelets dropping' and thus we were sent back to Missouri in a flury. DeNiel's blood pressure was rising quickly. We had only hours to pack for a very long (wintery) stay. We left on Sunday; the baby came via C-section on Friday, November 27, 2009. Adelyn weighed a whopping 1.14 lbs, more than what they had anticipated at least.

After 10+ weeks of daily hospital visits, close calls, 2 steps forward and 3 steps back...Addi finally came home on January 29th weighing 5.5Ibs. She was on oxygen until mid March. We had several tests run, one of them being a test to determine whether she had cystic fibrosis. Praise God that she is only a carrier and does not have any symptoms of cystic fibrosis!

Finally, in July we received medical clearance from the Board to return to the Dominican Republic. Aaahhh...ready to begin again in the place that the Lord has called us. After seven months in the states, our language came to a screeching halt. It's been tough starting over but day by day we are climbing back up the little language hill we built in Costa Rica.

DeNiel and I each had the privilege of starting bible studies. She has one here in our apartment complex and I have one with some young men at the new church plant we are working with in Pedro Brand. The kids jumped right back into the school work and picking up the language as well. Finally, I was able to take over the LC position. I went to Bogota, Colombia for a week of training and the rest of the time has been on the job training.

In closing, we look forward to what God has in store for us in 2011. We have enjoyed learning the culture again and seeing where God is at work. We will be bringing you up to speed with our ministry and our prayer requests in the days to come. Also, we would like to say, "Thank You" to all of our friends and family that supported us this last year through your prayers, financial giving, use of a car, mission housing provided by South Gate Baptist Church in Springfield, MO, hospital visits by many pastors, family, friends, and we can't forget our home church FBC St. James, MO. We could literally go on and on if we were to name everyone. So please, you know who you are and how much we love you!

In Him,
The Gillen Family

P.S. Today, we look at our 16Ib baby girl and we stand AMAZED!

Michael Jackson

I just have to blog about a funny conversation with our four year old. A few weeks ago Jacob was listening to my MP3 player just before bed. I was on the other side of the room, busy with school planning, etc… Jacob said, “Hey Mom! I didn’t know you had Michael Jackson on here?! Look. He’s playing guitar.”

Mom: “What? Michael Jackson? Bring it here…Honey, that’s not Michael Jackson. That’s Jeremy Camp. And besides, how do you know who Michael Jackson is anyway?”

Jacob: “Duh Mom! He’s the President of the United States?!”

There’s rarely a dull moment here. I can't count the number of times that DeNiel and I have discussed how much FBC St. James has impressed people literally all over the world. During our time in Costa Rica, it was great when mail day finally arrived. It seemed at times that FBC St. James was the only church in love with their missionaries! Missionaries began to ask, "Can we join your church?" We had goody boxes filled with the necessary nutrients for increased memory, language development, and walking 5 miles a day. You would think those nutrients would be found in a "nutrient bar" or a "one a day vitamin" but for us, they were stuffed in these little packets called "fudge rounds, oatmeal cream pies, star crunch and Hershey chocolates."

Well, here we are in another country and the packages are still arriving! We are feeling like the only missionaries on the face of the planet. FBC has shared the love again. They sent us cards, gifts, candy, baking goods, and letters of encouragement.

It’s an ABSOLUTE PRIVILEGE to be a part of FBC St. James, Mo!

We love you FBC St. James,

The Gillens

New Address

Happy New Year!

We find ourselves amazed and overwhelmed in looking back in 2010. What a journey it was not only for us but for many of you as well. We pray that the Lord will deepen all of our faith in 2011 and teach us how to walk deeper with him (Micah 6:8).

We wanted to give you all our new address and remind you that we have to pay around $2.00 per pound to receive mail from Agape! After spending 8 months state side, we are finally back in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It's good to be back, but we would like to give you an overview of our time in the states before we give you the low down here.

After his time in Haiti in April, Anthony preached over 20 messages through-out Missouri. We were blessed to tag along for most of them and meet new friends. We spent lots of time with family and friends, snow sledding, fishing, swimming, etc... We were blessed with a nice home in Springfield, MO provided by South Gate Baptist Church. We were also blessed with a car for those 8 months, thanks to Bill & Randi Fetters. Thanks to Lance Mayfield, our Farmers Insurance agent, we even had a free cell phone! Our kids are old enough now (most of them) to see how God has richly blessed us using His people. Thank you everyone. There are too many to list.

The entire family went through the IMB 'medical clearance' process. Since Adelyn was suspicious for Cystic Fibrosis, each child had to undergo a sweat test (see pic) and blood work. No other CF mutations showed-up in the other 3 kids. We were released to go back in late June. We flew out on July 8th. I cannot describe the smooth travel because you wouldn't believe me! God blessed our travels. Adelyn was just over 7 months and weighed 14 Ibs! She had come a long way from 1.14 Ibs!

We arrived in Santo Domingo in the afternoon. Our fellow missionary friends gave us a warm welcome/birthday parties for Ryan & Kylie. Our sweet friends had our house clean, cookies made, and even had washed some of our mildewed laundry! We have been on our knees praying for our language and cultural acquisition-again. God has been faithful. Next week we begin a Bible Study with the kids in our apartment complex. Please pray that they are faithful to participate and invite others. The girls are very excited about this. I (DeNiel) am also in the process of inviting the maids (there are about 5-8) to our home. We also pray that God would open a door for Bible Study with them. They are so sweet and seem open to the Lord and His word.

So, here we are. I realize I jumped from here to there and every where trying to recount the main points of these past 8 months. But the latest...Anthony and Kylie went on a mission trip to the east to translate for a team from Texas. Pray for their Spanish! And the Big news?

Adelyn's blood test shows NO CYSTIC FIBROSIS! We cried tears of joy for God's amazing grace. I had to post this picture of Addi taken tonight after her bath. She's holding on to her mosquito net and talking away! I cannot thank you enough for each prayer you have spoken on our behalf. God has been listening and answering. Please keep it up! We have some new requests above and below:

Pray for Alejandro (a Dominican friend of Anthony's) & his church and how God would use us in that area.

Praise God for good health.

Pray against any dengue or malaria. There is a dengue outbreak right now.

Pray for our safety-especially with the crazy traffic here!

"Then I said, 'Here I am, I have come-with the scroll written for me. Especially, for Addi's growth and health. We can now say that Adelyn has absolutely NO known health problems -thank the Lord! We do praise God for his grace and answer to prayer. Since Addi was born about 8-9 weeks early, her development will be 8-9 weeks behind a full term baby. Already, she is watching us and recognizing our faces and voices. She smiles and giggles at us (especially her silly daddy!).

Though we are still in the States waiting for medical clearance in order to return to Santo Domingo, we have been very busy. On top of seminary, Anthony has been preaching every Sunday at different churches around Missouri. This has been rewarding for our entire family. We have met some amazing people that love missionaries. Please pray that God will continue to use Anthony to speak to His bride, the church, here in the United States. Pray that the hearers will be open to receive a word from the Lord.

We are hoping to return to the field in late May or early June. Please also pray that God will prepare our family to live overseas again. Our Spanish is rusty and I'm afraid that we've gotten quite comfortable with our spoiled life style here. The good thing is, we are all excited to get back home to the Dominican Republic.

Thank you again for all your thoughts and prayers.

"Yet their Redeemer is strong; the LORD Almighty is his name. We are currently learning all about our Island, "Hispanola" and still trying to understand the language here.

We have had some amazing opportunities to visit a few churches here. At one of the services they asked Anthony to give the message (with no warning!) and then they called me (DeNiel) up front to say something and to sing a song-in Spanish! It was difficult, of course, but it was such a rich experience for all of us. The kids aren't sure what to think about a church service being outside and in the dark, or in someone's garage. It is good to know that God can make His church wherever He pleases!

We have visited a museum (picture up top), where the girls had to choose 5 pieces to write about. It was a lot of fun and a great learning experience. We have also been to a beautiful beach just 45 minutes from our house. Jacob's favorite thing to do is swim, swim, swim.

Brooklin turned 8 on September 7th and we are having a party for her. Kylie has been reading like crazy. The kids are adjusting well and even the heat does not keep them from having fun and enjoying life here in Santo Domingo.

I couldn't help but add this picture of a typical "trafficy" day here. These rows of traffic actually look straight, but don't be deceived! We have been settling in for almost 2 weeks now. We still have no Internet, but we're borrowing from a friend for now. We absolutely LOVE it here! The traffic is certainly different & the language is it's own, but it feels like home. We are where God has called us!

We plan to post some pictures when we finally get Internet. But for now here is a small update and a few prayer requests. Please pray that:

DeNiel will find courage to drive in the crazy traffic!

We will not be so fatigued from the heat.

God will use us mightily here for His glory & the furthering of His Kingdom.

The kids really like our new home. Kylie & Brooklin will be home schooled this year (Jacob too, of course!). During this next year Anthony & I will be training for his new position & learning more language (Dominican!) culture. The IMB is a wonderful agency to be with. Thank the Lord that He really is taking care of His missionaries through the churches giving to the IMB.

Thank you for keeping-up with our blog and for your prayers. As you can see from the pics below, our Christmas was packed with friends, family, fun, trips and even a paper Christmas tree! DeNiel's parents came from Missouri and we went to the beach, a coffee plantation, a nice restaurant up the mountain, and a few other fun places. We really had an amazing time together. The week went very fast! Our Nicaraguan family came to our house for a Christmas dinner. The children got stockings and a gift. They were very thankful. It was Pascual's first Christmas to celebrate as a Christian! Please continue to pray for this family. Pray for consistency with our Bible Studies and pray that Pascual Jasmina will invite others to join us.

We are still learning Spanish like crazy! Pray for us as well, that we will continue to learn the language and more importantly, to stay fervant and committed to our daily time with the Lord.He is good! Thank you for your prayers. God has been faithful.

"Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. BY THEM YOU WILL LIVE LONG IN THE LAND YOU ARE CROSSING THE JORDAN TO POSSESS." DEUTERONOMY 32:47
We are challenged here at our Missionary training to be in the Word daily. This doesn't mean a 5 to 10 minute devotion. This means at least 1 to 3 hours of Bible Study and Prayer. Maybe you are too busy to do this? Then I ask you, what makes you the one exception to the above scripture? I challenge you to get up earlier everyday this week and experience God at a deeper more intimate level. Allow His Word to be your life. God is waiting for this time with you. Set your alarm at least 30 minutes earlier this week and I PROMISE (better yet, God promises) you will not regret it.
"Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. We are all ready to go and VERY excited, but there is one small problem. I am sick today. I have a small fever with a TERRIBLY soar throat. Thankfully, the doctor's office worked me in for some meds to make me all better. But, we all know who the great physician is...God Himself. I have to admit I was a little discouraged to find myself sick this morning, but then I received an email from someone:

"Friends, as you go about your day, remember that our Lord knows what it holds. The Bible says He walks with us through everything--that He goes before us, follows us, and places His hand of blessing upon our heads."

I know that whatever you face today God already knows about it. We have moved most of our furniture out of the house. We also visited Northbridge Baptist Church in Springfield, MO on Sunday. The kids also got to visit with Nanna & Pappa for the weekend. Our days have become very exciting, but I cannot lie, they have also brought somewhat of a heavy heart for me. I am realizing that I will soon leave family, friends, and yes, furniture behind. We have TWO Sundays left at our home church in STJ, MO.

Pray for Anthony and I as we venture on a short trip to Santo Domingo to visit with our fellow missionary friends there. We will actually meet them for the first time and they will give us the tour of the city, office, our apartment that we'll be living in, etc... We want to be safe, of course, but also accomplish whatever the Lord has for us there for that week. Pray for our children while we are away. They will be staying with Momo & Poppy and Nanna & Pappa and Ninni! I'm sure they'll have a blast!

Thanks again for visiting our blog. And thanks for your prayers!!!

The Flag of the Dominican Republic

The Flag

of the Dominican Republic

Blog?!?

I've spent the last couple of weeks learning how to post pics on the web and what the heck is a BLOG anyway?!?
